A broad goes abroad

Tomorrow I leave for Iceland, armed with a very detailed Moleskine schedule that will probably go awry, a new camera, and an obscenely large backpack that inhibits every movement. I have decided to blog because I want to remember everything that goes down on this trip and have a way to inform my family and friends of my whereabouts and wellbeing without actually having to talk to them. I want to remember all of the ways that Europe changed me, how I grew as an individual and realized that I was capable of more than I ever imagined; you know, the little things that will really make a difference when they make a blockbuster motion picture based off of my memoir. It’s a vacation, after all, a last hurrah of sorts before the panic of graduation sets in (more than it already has).

The plan as it stands now is Reykjavik, Iceland –> Belfast, Ireland –> Sligo, Ireland –> Galway, Ireland –> Dublin, Ireland –> Rome, Italy –> Florence, Italy –> Venice, Italy –> Copenhagen, Denmark –> Amsterdam, Netherlands. In Amsterdam, I will be studying in an urban planning program at the University of Amsterdam’s Graduate School of Social Sciences. I know literally nothing about my program, except the address of where I’ll be staying, what time to show up to class on the first day, and how to score a sweet deal on a bike rental. The detailed Moleskine is simply blank after I arrive in Amsterdam on July 4, so I guess I’ll have to be all “flexible” and “spontaneous” and whatnot.

I’m going to try to post everyday, but that’s insanely unrealistic, so maybe I’ll aim for once a country. But even that might be a stretch, so once a week, minimum. But if wifi is spotty, this may be my last post. I’ll try my best.

As they say in Iceland, bless á meðan.

I’ve begun to grow suspicious that my entire study abroad program is just one big booster campaign for Amsterdam. Each day we learn about something that Amsterdam is doing perfectly that the rest of the world is failing at, like housing... Continue →
